Swaddle

Artists collaborate to push boundaries of textile in art

14 Victorian female artists are exhibiting works in fibre and textile to stimulate and challenge ideas around old cultural practices. “Swaddle” is an exhibition which explores the interplay between bondage and release, comfort and constraint and life and death through the manipulation of textiles and mixed media.

Artist Robert Hollingworth, guest speaker at the opening, noted “The coupling of the works and their media uniquely focus the viewer on how swaddling can assert cultural, political and personal agendas whilst exploring a diversity of associated concepts.”

Drawing from decades of artistic experience in visual, graphic and textile arts, this newly collaborative group, known as “Collective Notions”, has created a sensitive and dynamic body of 2D and 3D work including sculptures, hangings, panels.

The work of each artist demonstrates a divergence from traditional into non traditional forms in the pursuit of contemporary artistic expression.

The exhibition runs October 12 to 23, Tues – Sat at SJS Gallery, 120 Alexandra Pde, Fitzroy.

Every moment is

Every moment  IS

The theme of this work is the simple notion of presence in photography. As a commercial photographer, much of my work requires creating a mood by directing and intervening. These images are from the moments in between where I can step back and just be. Observant, present, witnessing.

Presence. The place where we feel comfortable in ourselves. Often, no talking. Stillness, tranquillity; inside and outside.

Just being.

Every moment is perfect. It is what it is and couldn’t be anything else.

No moment is good or bad. These are labels we add. The presence I explore in these images is a space of openness without judgment, of receptivity without a need to intervene or evaluate.

Just to be.

Landscapes and crowd scenes; chaos and silence. Expansiveness and space in every moment, every 500th of a second. The middle balance, in the flicker of aperture leaves.

I feel so comfortable just being present while shooting. Allowing the world to shine with the beauty that is already there. Just to sit and witness every moment as it is. Our received ideas of order and beauty are a well-manicured garden; I want to see and show the magic of the intertwined

Noha Khalaf

This collection of pieces draws on the artist’s background in architecture. In recreating famous structures as pieces of jewellery and small sculptures she is exploring ideas of scale and defining elements.

It is an exploration of how individual elements combine to make a whole, and yet are whole on their own. By isolating the elements which are most recognisable in each structure she is putting the spotlight on them. The viewer is forced to notice what it is about each building which makes it unique and instantly recognisable.

She is also challenging the accepted idea that a piece of jewellery can only ever serve one purpose. All the items being exhibited are made up of a number of pieces of jewellery which connect to form a whole.

Show runs: 23/11/2010-04/12/2010

Parting with pisces

In ode to the end of the age of Pisces and to salute the dawn of a new era, we descended in to the intricate abyss of the seas and surfaced with charmingly outlandish treasure; Neptunian jewels, fabric assembles of oceanic zones, underwater snap shots, swelling canvases, coral like shapes and formations, all tucked in an intimate cavity with a sound scape of tranquil aquatic whispers. Come. Exalt in the exquisiteness of our oceanic shelter and join us in the preservation of its wonders. The mood is sophisticated but playful, esoteric but light.
